Maternity Photographs

Clearly we all know I am better at back-blogging than blogging what is happening most recently. For more recent things, see my Instagram or Snapchat. 😉 Now that Addison is 6 months old, it seemed like a good time to finally share some of our maternity photographs. Makes sense, right?

Jason and I debated with the idea of hiring someone to take maternity photos of us, but decided that we would rather do them ourselves and spend the money on a spring break trip before Miss Addison was set to arrive. So, we set the the shots and tripod up (with the help of a great and super patient friend, thanks Randa!) at one of our favorite places in Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods. It is really fun to look back at these pictures now and think about how much our lives have changed and all of the emotions that we had leading up to meeting our baby girl. The last 6 months have not been easy, at all, but she is so much more wonderful than we ever could have imagined.

A Sweet Brunch

img_8949

This year, I celebrated my first Mother’s Day. Addison was about two weeks old at the time and I was definitely running on next to no sleep, so I am so thankful for the photographs that provide visual documentation of the day. Jason prepared such a thoughtful and sweet brunch, that was absolutely delicious too! On the menu were lavender biscuits, cranberry scones, a fruit spread, lemon curd, fig jam (my absolute favorite!!), wild blueberry preserves from our favorite French jam and jelly company, and Mont Blanc tea brought back from Angelina in Paris.

The brunch spread was sweet, but being able to spend the day with my husband and the little girl who made me a Mama was definitely the sweetest thing of all.

City Eats: Amsterdam, Melly’s Cookie Bar

img_8454_edited-1logo

While in Amsterdam, Jason and I, along with my Mom and her best friend, visited Melly’s Cookie Bar. Melly’s serves pastries and coffee, but their specialty is alfajores. The alfajor is a traditional Latin American cookie made up of two round cookies sandwiched together and often filled with dulce de leche, though other fillings may be used. At Melly’s we tried several variations of the alfajor, including ones dipped in dark chocolate, dipped in white chocolate, and one whose shortbread-esque cookies were replaced with meringue cookies.

I was definitely drawn in by the cookies and coffee, but I also really love Melly’s branding and store set-up! It absolutely made the retail and marketing major in me smile!

A Day in Manitou Springs

img_8126_resized

Jason and I have been living in Colorado for almost a year already! We absolutely love living here and have so many adventures planned! Manitou Springs was one of the first places we visited in our area and it remains one of our favorite places to visit with friends and family who visit us. When we visited this particular time, I was about halfway through my pregnancy with our sweet Addison, who is now almost 5 months old! It is hard to believe, really.

We love visiting Manitou for many reasons; a few of them being the overall charm of the town, the fun shops, the easy-going feel, and views. One of the things I love so much about Colorado is all the history found here and Manitou Springs does not disappoint in that arena. Manitou Springs was founded in the 1870s with the intent that the town would become a scenic health resort because of the healing mineral waters found there. The mineral springs are still functioning today, and visitors can have a drink of the water that “built the town.”

Grace

IMG_5979_1

Two years ago, I rung in 2014 in London with Jason, my sister, and one of our closest friends. We found ourselves at a little bar called “Grace,” on the eve of the New Year. We needed a little snack prior to seeing Les Miserables on the West End.

The real point is, though, is that we stumbled into a place called “grace.” We stumbled into grace. Mirriam Webster lists one definition for grace as: a way of moving that is smooth and attractive and that is not stiff or awkward.

I could not have known or anticipated then the struggle that 2015 would be. 2014 was largely wonderful, Jason and I enjoyed the rest of our time in Germany, prior to moving back to the states in September of 2014.

We rung in 2015 at our new home in California. California was always a place I dreamed of living most of my life, so at first, it seemed like a dream come true. What it actually became though, was one of the most difficult and lonely years of my life. I did not walk through 2015 gracefully, no, I stumbled and crawled my way through. I just needed to make it through in any way possible. I battled the most intense depression that I have ever experienced. I became a shell of the person I had worked so hard to become.

But here’s the thing about grace. Sometimes it finds you. Unexpectedly. Grace is undeserved, but God gives it anyway. Another definition for grace is: favor. Mercy.

2015 taught me that some years are not graceful. Some years we just do whatever we can do survive; hold on to the hope that things will get better. And, they do.

Here I sit, the first week of 2016 in our new home in Colorado, while our sweet baby kicks, the snow falls outside and the fire keeps me warm inside. This morning it hit me, that after all of the mess of 2015, I am finally happy again. Content. Inspired. I am finally looking forward and not backward. But, I am also grateful, because I know that without all the difficult things we experience, we would not always recognize or appreciate the good things.

“Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.” -Victor Hugo, Les Miserables

Aztec and Booties

Target dress, Frye booties, purse from Italy

I really love booties and I am always looking for a new outfit to wear them with. Recently, I paired these studded ones with this fun purple lace dress with Aztec details. I was drawn to the bright colors of the dress and feel that they complement each other so well. The pairing turned out to be the perfect outfit for a day of exploring Pasadena and taking in the Sidewalk Chalk Festival. It was so inspiring to see the amazing artwork people created using chalk!

City Eats: LA, Cacao Mexicatessen

IMG_4632

Prior to moving to LA, I had never heard of chilaquiles. Jason and I caught an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives after moving here, where we were introduced to this traditional Mexican dish. Lightly fried, quartered corn tortillas are used for the base of the dish. The tortillas are then topped with a green or red salsa or mole, and sometimes chicken. The dish is then covered with crema, shredded queso fresco, onion and avocado. It is often served with beans, eggs or guacamole. Here in LA, it is often served as a breakfast dish. Needless to say, it was something we decided we needed to try.

Cacao Mexicatessen’s chilaquiles, and restaurant in general, continue to make best of LA food lists. We recently ventured over to LA’s Eagle Rock neighborhood to check it out. I started my meal with the dulce cafe con leche (coffee with piloncillo, cinnamon and milk,) which was perfectly sweet enough for my palate and I loved the addition of the cinnamon! I sprung for the tres leches pancakes, house-made buttermilk pancakes infused with sweetened tres leches milk sauce and topped with strawberries, whipped cream and sliced almonds. The pancakes were served atop the tres leches milk sauce and sprinkled with cinnamon. I have been on this pancake kick lately and these are some of the best I’ve ever eaten in any restaurant!

Jason ordered the chilaquiles topped with mole sauce. Mole is a traditional Mexican sauce that is made with chocolate(!!). The tortillas and sauce were then topped with two over-easy eggs. The dish was served with black beans topped with queso fresco and potatoes. We don’t have any other chilaquiles experiences to compare this to, but we really enjoyed Cacao Mexicatessen’s version, for sure!

We’re still deciding what to order next time. Maybe we’ll try the carnitas de pato (duck tacos!)

Monrovia Highlights

IMG_4240

One of Jason’s and my favorite things to do during our free time is to shop for antiques, visit local thrift shops and flea markets. A few Fridays ago, we started out in Pasadena checking our thrift stores and ended our day in Monrovia, a cute little town not far from Pasadena. The main street is chock-full of fun little shops, antique stores and loads of buildings with history and character.

We worked up a bit of an appetite, so we stopped at a cute little cafe on Monrovia’s main street, Friends. Yes, after the beloved sitcom and they also serve sandwiches named after the fun bunch. The baristas there were so kind and informative. I had my first ever Green Tea Latte (seriously good stuff) and we shared a fresh made fig bar, so good!

I love the details of this movie theater and of course, the neon lights!
